LOS ANGELES, Calif. - When Kobe Bryant stays home to rest, the Los Angeles Lakers must play a different game to compete. With balanced scoring, relentless rebounding and an unlikely contribution from a newcomer, they got the formula exactly right against the slumping Orlando Magic.Jeremy Lin scored 18 points, Carlos Boozer added 12 points and 14 rebounds, and the Lakers beat the Magic 101-84 on Friday night.Rookie Tarik Black had all of his career-high 14 points and nine rebounds in the second half for the Lakers, who won for the second time in their five games this season when coach Byron Scott chooses to rest the 36-year-old Bryant.Bryant wasnt at Staples Center to watch his teammates steady effort in finishing off the Magic. He also sat out three games last month, and he missed Mondays game in Portland. We try to bring more energy when hes out, play more up-tempo, said Nick Young, who had nine points. They had plenty of energy, maintaining a lead throughout the final 45 minutes. They finished off Orlando with a 12-2 run midway through the fourth quarter, highlighted by three straight baskets from Boozer.I just saw us being much more aggressive than we were the last game, much more physical, Lakers coach Byron Scott said, referring to their blowout loss to the Clippers two nights ago. (We) quit assuming every shot is going in.Victor Oladipo scored 17 points and Tobias Harris added 15 despite spraining his left ankle for the Magic, who have lost five straight for the first time this season. Its real frustrating, Harris said. I know its tough for us to score out there. I cant really pinpoint what it is.Former USC star Nikola Vucevic had 14 points and 11 rebounds. But Orlando was outrebounded 60-36, including 31-16 in the second half, leaving coach Jacque Vaughn a bit steamed.I dont know how you gauge effort, Vaughn said. If Tarik Black is rebounding the basketball with a ferocious tenacity, then I guess he has great effort, (but) youve got to take some responsibility. It starts with looking at the mirror. So that will be us.Los Angeles got an eye-catching performance from Black, the big man recently acquired off waivers from Houston. After sitting out the first half, Black made all four of his shots and his first six free throws, exciting the Staples Center crowd with his energy and persistence on the boards. We had everybody hitting the boards today, and its contagious on this team, Black said.Lin led the Lakers steady effort down the stretch, scoring eight points in the fourth quarter. Ryan Kelly added 13 points and eight rebounds, and Jordan Hill had 11 points and nine boards.TIP-INSMagic: The team will re-evaluate Harris ankle on Saturday. He is the Magics leading scorer with 18.1 points per game. ... Vaughn is a Los Angeles-area native who grew up rooting for the Lakers championship teams of the 1980s. Before the game, he rattled off the uniform numbers of the starters, including No. 4, Byron Scott. ... Channing Frye played despite an injured right arm, scoring six points.Lakers: Lin blocked a shot by 7-footer Dewayne Dedmon in the first quarter. ... The Lakers held a pregame moment of silence for Alina Kupchak, the 15-year-old daughter of Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak, who died earlier this week after a lengthy illness. ... Starting forward Wesley Johnson missed his third straight game with a strained right hip flexor.BOARD BLOWOUTThe Lakers 24-rebound advantage was their biggest of the season. Boozer and Black outboarded the Magic by themselves in the second half, 18-16.SLUMPING SWAGGYYoung had his fourth straight rough shooting game, going 2 for 13. The Lakers top reserve and offensive energy source missed all six of his 3-point attempts. He is just 13 for 53 in his last four games. Scott suggested Young should come in early to get up more shots, but Young politely disagreed. Im going to stick to being the whole Swaggy P dude, and continue to shoot, he said. At least Young has made 25 consecutive free throws.UP NEXT:Magic: At Portland on Saturday.Lakers: Host Portland on Sunday.
. There was little fanfare, though, when the Yankees captain was taken out of his final regular-season Subway Series game in the eighth inning. Jeter watched the last four outs from the bench, pulled off the field during a double switch Thursday night as the Yankees held off the Mets 1-0.
. He made that dream a reality Wednesday night. Olt, who grew up in Branford, Connecticut, attended UConn and made a nearly 2 1-2 hour trek to Boston a handful of times to watch the Red Sox, belted a two-run homer, one of four hit by Cubs in a 16-9 rout that completed a three-game interleague series sweep.
Jeff Carter had two goals and an assist as the Kings stretched their streak to seven wins in a row with a 4-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday.
.com) - The Milwaukee Bucks will try to get another win on this homestand Thursday night when they welcome the Utah Jazz to the Bradley Center.
. - Dominika Cibulkova erased three match points in the second set Wednesday and beat Agnieszka Radwanska 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the Sony Open.Winnipeg Goldeyes starter Chris Salamida gave up four runs in the top of the first inning on Wednesday night. He then proceeded to put up seven zeroes and watch his teammates come from behind. With Salamida dealing, the Goldeyes came back and beat the Lincoln Saltdogs 6-4 to win the opening game of the best-of-five American Association semifinal series at Shaw Park. Game 2 is slated for Thursday night at Winnipegs downtown ballpark. "That guy (Salamida) is just a great pitcher and we knew hed shut em down and wed come back," said Abercrombie, who went three-for-four with three runs scored, an RBI, three stolen bases and a game-changing triple. "Sal is a great pitcher and for the rest of us, it was just another game. We knew wed come back and win. I was able to get a few hits and the guys got a few hits and we came from behind and won. But how about Sal? I mean, he gave up four in the first and then put up seven straight zeroes. What a performance." Salamida gave up four runs on five hits in the top of the first as heavy-hitting Ian Gac doubled in two runs to lead the way. But that was it. Salamida shut down Lincoln for the next seven innings, then Brendan Lafferty pitched a scoreless ninth as the Fish took a 1-0 series lead. Winnipeg got on the board in the second as Abercrombie beat out an infield single, stole second, stole third and scored on a ground out to first by Ryan Pineda. The Goldeyes tied it in the third as Jake Blackwood led off with a single and scored on a triple to straightaway centre by Abercrombie.dddddddddddd Reggie was fired up when he reached third and so was the rest of the team. The next hitter, Donnie Webb, drilled a belt-high fastball off the light standard in right-centre and with Abercrombie scoring in front of him, Webb had a monster home run and the Fish had tied the game. In the fifth, the Goldeyes took the lead for good as Casey Haerther drew a one-out walk, Abercrombie singled, Donnie Webb walked and then Mazzola hit a ground ball to short. Webb was forced out at second, but Mazzola beat the throw to first and Haerther scored. But the throw to first was in the dirt and Lincoln first baseman Ian Gac lost sight of the ball. The speedy Abercrombie took advantage of the miscue and scored behind Haerther to give Winnipeg a 6-4 lead. The 34-year-old Abercrombie did have three hits, but he beat Lincoln with his legs. "Ive been blessed with some speed and I was able to use it tonight," Reggie said. Salamida (1-0, 4.50 ERA) picked up the victory while Lincoln starter Joe Bisenius (0-1, 9.00 ERA) took the loss. Brendan Lafferty pitched a scoreless ninth inning to get the save. The Goldeyes finished with six runs on 12 hits while the Saltdogs had four runs on 12 hits. The Goldeyes and Saltdogs will meet in Game 2 of this semifinal series on Thursday night at 7. Marquis Fleming (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will get the start for Lincoln, while Ethan Hollingsworth (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will take to the bump for Winnipeg. ' ' '
